// What is GrapheneOS?

PRIVACY IS NOT
A FEATURE.
IT'S THE FOUNDATION.

GrapheneOS is an open-source, privacy and security-focused mobile operating system with Android app compatibility. It's not a skin or a custom ROM — it's a ground-up hardened rebuild of Android with a decade of security research behind it.

// Why Open Source Matters

THE CODE IS
PUBLIC. EVERY
LINE OF IT.

When you use a closed-source operating system — iOS, Samsung One UI, stock Android — you are trusting a corporation to tell the truth about what your phone does. You have no way to verify. You simply hope.

GrapheneOS is different. Every single line of code is published at github.com/GrapheneOS — fully auditable by anyone on earth. Thousands of independent security researchers have reviewed it. There are no hidden functions, no secret data collection, no backdoors that could be introduced without the entire world seeing.

This isn't just a philosophical point. It has real consequences. When a vulnerability is discovered in GrapheneOS, it's patched publicly, transparently, and faster than any closed-source competitor. The community acts as a permanent, decentralised audit.

"Given enough eyeballs, all bugs are shallow."

— Linus's Law, open source software

GrapheneOS is maintained by the GrapheneOS Project — a non-profit, entirely funded by donations, with no corporate owners and no government ties. No one can be pressured into adding a backdoor. No one can be acquired and corrupted. The code speaks for itself.

HOW IT HARDENS
ANDROID

Hardened Kernel

GrapheneOS ships a hardened kernel with a memory-safe allocator (hardened_malloc), stronger ASLR entropy, Control Flow Integrity (CFI), and reduced kernel attack surface. These changes close entire classes of exploits that affect standard Android.

Zero Telemetry

No data is sent to Google. No advertising ID exists. No crash reports are phoned home. The OS is built with the assumption that the network is adversarial.

Sandboxed App Model

Every app runs in full isolation. GrapheneOS adds storage scopes, per-app network firewall, contact scopes, and granular sensor permissions — far beyond what stock Android provides.

Verified Boot

The bootloader is re-locked with GrapheneOS's own verified boot keys. On every boot, the entire OS is cryptographically verified. If a single byte has changed, the device refuses to boot.

Network Hardening

Built-in per-app network firewall blocks apps from accessing the internet without explicit permission. DNS over HTTPS and MAC address randomisation per-network enabled by default.

Fast Security Updates

GrapheneOS ships security patches on a monthly cadence, often ahead of Google's official release. No OEM delay. Updates are delivered over-the-air with automatic rollback if verification fails.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Can I still use banking apps on GrapheneOS?+
Yes. GrapheneOS supports sandboxed Google Play, which lets you install and run Play Store apps — including most banking apps — without granting them system-level access. Many users run their full set of apps without issue.
Is the bootloader really re-locked?+
Yes. Every device we ship has the bootloader re-locked after GrapheneOS setup, using the official AVB key signing process. This means verified boot works exactly as designed — the OS is cryptographically verified on every boot.
Will I lose all Google services?+
Only if you want to. GrapheneOS ships without Google services by default, but you can optionally install sandboxed Google Play. Most Google apps work inside it, completely isolated from system privileges.
How often does GrapheneOS receive updates?+
GrapheneOS ships monthly security updates and often patches vulnerabilities ahead of Google's official release. Update delivery is over-the-air and seamless.
What happens if I want to return to stock Android?+
You can flash stock Android at any time using Google's official tools. The hardware is completely unchanged — it's a software change only.
Do you ship internationally?+
Yes. We ship to the UK, EU, US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. All devices are fully legal to import — GrapheneOS is legal in every jurisdiction we ship to.
Why is open source important for a privacy OS?+
Because you can't truly trust what you can't verify. With closed-source operating systems like iOS or Samsung One UI, you have to take the manufacturer's word that they're not collecting your data. With GrapheneOS, every single line of code is public — thousands of security researchers worldwide have audited it. There are no secrets.
Who maintains GrapheneOS?+
GrapheneOS is maintained by the GrapheneOS Project, a non-profit open source project. It is not affiliated with Google, any corporation, or any government. Funding comes entirely from donations. This independence is a core part of why it can be trusted.
