GrapheneOS on Pixel 9: Full Review 2025

We've been running GrapheneOS on the Pixel 9 since launch. Here's our full review after months of daily use.

GrapheneOS on Pixel 9: The Daily Driver Test

The Pixel 9 is one of the most capable GrapheneOS devices available. We've been running it as a daily driver for months. Here's what we found.

Hardware

The Pixel 9 features Google's Tensor G4 chip, 12GB LPDDR5X RAM, and a 6.3" Actua OLED display. The build quality is premium — polished aluminium frame, matte glass back, and a camera bar that's become Google's signature design language.

On GrapheneOS, the hardware performs exactly as you'd expect. There are no compatibility issues, no missing features, no hardware that doesn't work. GrapheneOS is built specifically for Pixel hardware.

Performance

The Tensor G4 handles everything without breaking a sweat. App launch times are fast, multitasking is smooth, and gaming performance is strong. The absence of Google's background processes means the chip's resources go to what you're actually doing rather than telemetry pipelines.

We noticed the device running slightly cooler than the same hardware on stock Android, likely due to reduced background processing load.

Battery Life

This is where GrapheneOS genuinely shines. Without Google Play Services running constantly in the background, the Pixel 9 consistently achieves better battery life than stock Android.

In our testing: approximately 7-8 hours screen-on time under moderate usage. Standby drain is significantly lower than stock Android.

Camera

The Pixel 9's camera system is one of the best on any smartphone. On GrapheneOS, the full camera system works — including computational photography features, Night Sight, and 4K video. Some AI-powered features that depend on Google's cloud processing are unavailable, but the hardware quality makes this irrelevant for most users.

App Compatibility

With sandboxed Google Play installed, we ran every app in our usual workflow without issues. Banking apps, social media, navigation, food delivery — all worked perfectly.

The sandboxed Play setup takes about 10 minutes and is well worth it for the occasional app that needs it.

Security

GrapheneOS on Pixel 9 gives you hardware security guarantees that no other platform can match. The Titan M2 security chip handles cryptographic operations. Verified boot ensures the OS is genuine. The hardened kernel protects against memory exploitation.

Verdict

GrapheneOS on the Pixel 9 is the best privacy smartphone experience available at any price. The hardware is excellent, the software is mature, and the security is unmatched. At £599 from PrivacyPixel, it represents exceptional value compared to alternatives.

Rating: 9.5/10

The only reason it's not a perfect 10 is that a tiny number of apps still have issues with sandboxed Play — but this affects fewer than 1% of apps and is being resolved with each update.
