GrapheneOS vs LineageOS: The Privacy Comparison
LineageOS is the most popular custom Android ROM. But how does it compare to GrapheneOS for security and privacy?
GrapheneOS vs LineageOS: Why Security Matters More Than Popularity
LineageOS is the most widely installed custom Android ROM, with support for hundreds of devices and a large community. GrapheneOS supports only Pixel devices. By almost any popularity metric, LineageOS wins — but popularity isn't the right metric for a privacy and security operating system.
Security Architecture
LineageOS is built primarily for customisation and device longevity — keeping older devices running with modern Android. Security hardening is not its primary focus. It ships without significant modifications to the Android security model.
Critically, many LineageOS builds ship with an unlocked bootloader by default. An unlocked bootloader means verified boot doesn't function correctly — you cannot guarantee the OS hasn't been tampered with.
GrapheneOS treats security as its primary purpose. The kernel is hardened with hardened_malloc, stronger ASLR, and CFI. The bootloader is re-locked with GrapheneOS's signing keys. Every boot verifies the entire OS cryptographically.
Update Speed
LineageOS update frequency varies significantly by device. Popular devices receive updates regularly; less popular ones may wait weeks or months. Security patches are often delayed.
GrapheneOS ships security patches within days of Google's monthly release, consistently, for all supported devices.
Device Support Philosophy
LineageOS supports hundreds of devices, including phones that are years past their manufacturer's support window. This is admirable for sustainability but creates security risks — older devices often have hardware vulnerabilities that can't be patched in software.
GrapheneOS supports only recent Pixels with dedicated security hardware (Titan M2). This focus allows deeper integration and stronger guarantees.
The Verdict
For security and privacy, GrapheneOS is categorically better than LineageOS. The comparison isn't close.
LineageOS is excellent for its intended purpose — extending the life of older devices and enabling customisation. But it was never designed as a privacy and security OS, and it shouldn't be evaluated as one.
If privacy is your reason for switching, GrapheneOS is the only serious choice.
